FORGIVE ME JOR-EL! Didn’t really feel like sitting at my computer late last night- spent a bunch of time relaxing at the TV and playing cards- so my true apologies for the break in the ritual!!
Didn’t wake up yesterday morning until past 12!! We were in the middle of a humid South Carolina parking lot, I left the bus to try to meditate and get some sun, had to go clear across the block to get away from bugs. Got situated in my little Marriot room, exercised in that (instead of on the curb like I was about to), and set out to find some good food to get my day off started. Walked with Nathan and Steven for a bit and I stopped at a mediterranean grill to eat while they walked off to Walmart… turns out the place REAAALLY was overpriced, so walked to an asian fusion place instead. Back at the hotel I got right to work… feels real good to have a loooong stretch of uninterrupted time with which to do whatever I please. For the sake of humoring you, I’ll write out my todo list from yesterday: -make reminders sync to mac, finish bob’s blog, practice, do more vlogging, warmup, instagram audience? (referred to me wanting to learn how to use hashtags properly), composing, practice classical, make one instagram post. I did all those thangs! When I got stuck, I just switched to something else and spent as much time on it as I wanted so that I got into a good flow, and then switched back whenever I got bored of it. Around 7 I walked to another place for dinner (or lunch.. I don’t really know anymore). It had been thundering most of the day, and a storm knocked out their power! Sooooo I got ratatouille at the Italian joint next door. Met a bunch of the guys by the hotel pool grilling and swapping stories- Nathan was there too. Pedro, one of the sound guys (he’s Filipino, super sweet and smart), asked me if I wanted some meat, and when I told him I was vegetarian, he offered to grill me whatever I wanted on Monday, our next day off. (“Educate me”, he said, “what do vegetarians like to grill?”) If all goes well I’ll be eating a fat portobello mushroom burger on Monday. All real nice guys. George (the guy who calls me Harry Potter) is working for Chance the Rapper after this gig… “nice kid”, he said, while Nathan and I look at each other in disbelief. I heard a lot of Nathan’s stories from his exploits- that kid has done some cool stuff!! He played (at least one show) with Solange, Beyonce’s sister, and met a whole crew of impressive cats. It excites me that this gig could really get me exposed to other artists and give me even more opportunities. The money these guys make is NOT bad either let me just say!
I went back to my room around 830 to play a little more trumpet- worked on this classical etude from a guy called Charlier (haven’t played it right yet after 2 months of working on it). Before I could pack up I had to help Nathan grab some ice from the ice machine for the coolers on the buses. While stocking up the bus, the crew guys on the other bus asked in disbelief why we were doing all that work- “aren’t you guys part of the band?” they asked. Truthfully, we didn’t know, but our production manager has been sweet to us, and when she asks us to do something, we’re not really in a position as young adults to say no, especially in such a professional environment. Steve had gone to see Solo, the new Star Wars movie, and he told me it was the best of the new generation of Star Wars. Interesting! I’ll definitely have to see it then, possibly on a day off where I can find a cheap movie theatre somewhere (gotta be stingy). If not I’ll see it in July with the family.
Got on the bus to drive off around 10 PM, the front lounge had a basketball game on, the back lounge (three kids + Nate) had Casino with Robert DeNiro playing. The ending- lots of killing, but interesting movie. Nate told us a story on the importance of bringing your own soap to hotels (he had an allergic reaction one day to hotel soap and thought it was scabies), aaaand once it got a little later we stopped at a truck stop to bathroom and stretch. Allllmost bought matching cowboy hats with the crew, but ultimately nobody made the purchase. Then it was back on the bus to watch Family Guy and play cards (as if I didn’t already feel like a child amongst real adults). As I was losing a game I started drifting, despite it being 1210 (exactly twelve hours after awakening)… soooo I just read myself to sleep in my bunk. That brings us to this morning! Thankfully we gained an hour- we’re in Pensacola, Florida now and it’s only 9 AM even though I worked out for half an hour and spent all this time bloggin’. Now it’s off to find FOOOD and figure out where in tarnation I even am (eek the southern drawl is getting to me). Tootle-oo for now.
